Moderation is True Temperance
Feeling sorry for myself.
Last night I was ‘escorted’ out of The Old Green Tree “having had enough.” I am surprisingly not that hung over (guessing to do with book, see later, or that organic cider minimises hang overs) but surprisingly saddened by my actions.
After a day of foundation design coursework I enjoyed a 500ml bottle of Westons Organic cider with my (organic) beetroot soup. I then took myself to said pub for “one more” but this time to also soak up the atmosphere of this tiny, wood panelled, real ale, proper pub. As is custom in such pubs I fell into conversation with those at the bar. For my first pint I chatted to, or more accurately smiled and nodded to, barely being able to understand, two Bath born and bred grumpy old men. Terrance explained the terrible state of affairs (human rights) started by Cherie Blair the upshot being that he will vote BNP having been labour all his life. That and his various “birds.” For my second pint Emma (next stool along) and I gave earnest advice to New York Tom and wife regarding what to see and do in Bath in one day. Boy are they going to busy today. For my third and fourth pints and half a Wild Hare Bath ale I chatted to, and provided amusement for, Jon and painter Harry. Emma by now had turned her back on me and glanced disapprovingly at me presumably for being blatantly drunk and loud. Harry would not let me visit his studio which I do not think had any thing to do with him thinking that I am gay as I showed him my wallet photos of Hannah and he still would not invite me.
I am not sure what happened next but guess that I was coaxed out and Tim (landlord on night off) saw me to the door and chatted to me about something I remember not but which ended with me calling him a liar and running off. Oh the shame.
I now know that I woke Hannah with a lively phone call. She tells me that she was short with me so that she could fall back to sleep which I hope is true as, having switched operators, Hannah is as good as a premium rate number (financially if that is not clear).
It was most likely before that phone call that I was ill. Testament to my ingenuity (and drunken stupidity) I managed to open Developments in Structural Form to pages twenty four and five and vomit with only minor splatters on the carpet. It was the memory and disbelief of just that which got me out of bed at 7:30am. It is extraordinary how intact the vomit remained even with the book closed. I moved stench ridden book to bath tub, cleaned carpet to put-your-nose-in-it-and-sniff cleanliness, washed last nights dishes (guilt), drank two pints of water and found hspaintings.com written on my left forearm.
I am experienced enough to not entertain vows to never ever drink again ever ever ever but am going to be abstinent till my last exam on Thursday 8th June.
After two portions of lasagne I headed back to the Old Green Tree and gave them a box of variety chocolates in way of apology and acknowledgement of my anti social shenanigans. Tim was very nice about it and rather amused. Tim thought that I was asked to leave by barperson Angela for disturbing Harry and Jon which I was ashamed to hear. On my way out I read this notice:
Moderation is True Temperance
Feeling terrible about whatever it was I did to offend Harry I phoned to apologise. I am so glad I did as he was not at all offended and in fact had the best Tuesday night for ages. He also explained that I was asked to leave simply because I had had enough and Angela was worried that I would not make it home or something. He shed more light on the evening from which I now know that I need to change my pin numbers.

Hehe!
Wow you are quite a regular there huh? And to think when you came to uni you didn’t really drink at all.
Thanks for the tip made me laugh!
Let me reminisce over the millennium New Year’s Eve celebrations we had together with a certain gingerbread man!
You’re a legend when you’re drunk!
Ah yes, millennium New Year’s Eve. That will go down as one of the best nights of my life. And in time I expect I will look back at last night and see the funny side.
..and I thought we were going to The Old Green Tree on Sunday evening….
