Basil Spence Project: Crit
Yesterday we had our final Crit, and we are so pleased it is over. So much work, so little sleep, so much passion, and yet not enough achieved.
Julian, structural engineer and comedian, has basically lived with me while we get the model and engineering done. If it were not for his cool manner and easy going nature I think I would have freaked out over this stressful ordeal. He too liked the time lapse photography that our group got in, to the extent that we make a time lapse of us eating, which is one of the funniest videos we made.
The roof of the structural model was complex and hard to model. We came up with a little contraption over a desk.

And here is the model finished, which only happened a few hours before the presentation:

and the architects model;

The architects made a beautiful 1:50 section through our design:

And here we are presenting:

I think I managed to bore Julian with my engineering talk again:

But as pretty as our models were, as well as we spoke, and as exciting and ambitious as our design was we did not win the competition as, it became clear, we did not have a good building environmental strategy. We dismissed many environmental ideas as they really would not be implemented for a building that was going to be around for six months rather we intended to throw environmental stuff at the building when it arrived in the UK however we did not go into enough detail. Also our ideas for environment were dismissed during the crit. It is annoying to be reassured in a tutorial only to be ‘told off’ during a presentation.

haha i am the first!
rob~~you should get shaved.the model is so cool!
Gutted for you Rob, you put a lot of work in and you deserved more.
I think we all need cheering up - put up the time lapse eating shots! xx
Sorry you didn’t win - disappointing for all of you - but what an amazing model - no wonder it has been appropriated by one of the tutors. Now go wow them with your report on the project.
Where is the eating video…?
we are awesome. we put on a great show
Yep, post the time lapse video! :-)
I COMPLETELY agree Rob, although we were probably told the opposite, as we had Doug King for the tutorials, and not for the crit. I was so sure our strategy would work and to be told straight out that it wouldn’t, really threw me in the crit and then I panicked and froze up for the rest of it! Grrr! They’re so mean, after all the hard work we all put in. I just feel so disappointed I didn’t do our design justice! Dreading the mark giving on Tuesday! But congrats to Adam and co!
Yeah, a deserved win for Adam, Luke, Olley, Alex and whats-her-name. I always thought the idea of two walls was boring, but their models very cool. However the final crit was to prove the depth of their design. Good stuff.
